Chinese Tribal Minority Dong people's hand-woven homespun local cloth textile fabric
This kind cloth is a unique traditional craftsmanship from Dong people, Congjiang area, Guizhou Province. The front side is of metallic-like lustre. Producing this kind textile is very complicated. First, dipping cotton material into a tub of indigo, rinsing it in water, setting it out to dry. The darker the fabric, the more times it needs to be dyed. Then soaked the cloth in cowhide, pig's blood or a mixture of pounded persimmon peels and chestnut shells to add a red tinge, and to make the cloth stiff like starched. Finally, coated it with egg whites, pounded on a stone slab with a heavy wooden mallet until a metallic-like sheen is produced. The fabric is normally in two colors, deep brown or black.
